Visitors claim wins in Veterans’ Week of Golf

-

Tocumwal Golf & Bowls Club held its NSW Veterans Golf Association Yamaha Week of Golf last Wednesday.

Nearly 180 players, representing 51 clubs across Australia contested the tournament.

The event continues to grow from year to year, growing from around 140 players last year.

Play was separated into men’s and ladies over the first three days with a Medley 4BBB being held on the Friday culminating a huge week of golf.

Most players had just come from a tournament in Howlong and a fair proportion are headed on to Moama this week competing in the Rich River Week of Golf.

Scoring was hot over the four days with individual scores exceeding 40 points being required to take out most of the daily prizes.

The two main events for the week were aggregate over the three rounds, in both scratch and nett results.

Overall winner for the men’s event was Ross Wells from Everglades Golf Club in Queensland with a total score of 114 points over the three days.

Second was fellow Everglades member Noel Gray with 113 points.

In the ladies’ section it was again a duplicate with ladies from Ryde Parramatta placing one and two.

Christine Chang came in the winner with 113 points, this time winning by three points from Helena Chung on 110 points.

In the scratch event there was a perpetual event for the men.

Neville Reid — father of Australian cricketer, Bruce — frequented Tocumwal many a year for this event and his family asked if they could initiate an event in his honour as he loved the area.

Runaway winner of the scratch event was Greg Kent from Charlestown Golf Club in the NSW Hunter region with 220 over the three days. Runner-up was Graham George on 220.

Tocumwal Golf & Bowls Club will again host the event next year, from March 11 to 16. Players interested in participating should contact the Pro Shop on (03) 5874 9172.
