Sun finally shines on Jerilderie’s Gold Cup
Jerilderie Race Club organisers could not have asked for a better day on Saturday, with the pleasant weather helping to attract hundreds of people to the six-race Jerilderie Gold Cup Race Day.
The picture perfect sunny conditions was a relief for organisers, after two years of poor weather forced cancellations in 2016 and 2017.
Jerilderie locals were in full voice on the day, and particularly in race two when Jerilderie trainer Phil Sweeney and his daughter Brooke won with My Zarmidala.
Later in the day it was the Leeton trained Zarreig winning the Jerilderie Gold Cup from Greipel in second and Sweeney in third and fourth with Our Project and Financial Miss respectively.
Punters packed the bookies ring throughout the day, whilst others took an easier approach sitting back on the lawn lining the track or popping champagne in the marquees.
Jerilderie Race Club president Des McRae said he was thrilled with how the day went, saying it provided great benefit for the town as well.
‘‘We’ve had a fantastic day with a huge crowd, the weather has been excellent, the entries in the Fashions on the Field are outstanding with many people dressing up and really showing off their outfits,’’ Mr McRae said.
‘‘The racing has been without any incidents; every horse has had a fair chance and it was great to see a stalwart of the training brigade of the Southern District Association — Peter Clancy — win his first Jerilderie Gold Cup with his family favourite horse Zarreig.
‘‘It’s good to see Phil get a winner and then have a second in the next race in which local trainer Ross Purcell had a third placing.
‘‘It’s great to see the locals participate and share in some of the prizemoney.
‘‘It’s a major relief to have a full day of racing and to see people come back to the races.
‘‘There are also a lot of outsiders coming along today and a lot of young people. They’re the next generation of racegoers and we are delighted to see them at Jerilderie.’’
