Rich River pair claim three-day Challenge
Outback Challenge The 18th Outback Golf Challenge began with couples from various golf clubs in South Australia, Victoria, NSW and Queensland, as well as the local clubs, hitting off in perfect conditions for the Mixed 4BBB event played at the Finley, Jerilderie and Berrigan courses over the October holiday weekend.
On Saturday, Finley hosted the first day of the Challenge, and it was Hans and Nancy Duursma from Rutherglen with 44 stableford points who claimed the day’s trophy.
After a three-way countback it was Ross Lacy and Betty Cranston from Cobram/Barooga with 43 points who were runners-up, with Finley’s Beau Makkinga and Heather Daniel also with 43 points in third.
Sunday saw the second round played at Jerilderie.
Bill Shepherd ( Karumba Qld) and Di Rutherford (Jerilderie) with 42 points were the day’s winners. Terry and Yvonne Tisdale (Pakenham) with 41 points were runnersup and Geoff and Jan Allborough (Stawell) with 40 finished in third.
The third and final day moved to Berrigan on Monday where Peter and Lyn James (Rich River) with 46 points were the day’s winners.
Bill and Lorraine Sztynda (Orbost) with 44 points were runners-up and Phil and Lyn Willcock (Stawell) finished in third.
After the three days the outright winners with 125 points were Peter and Lyn James (Rich River) and second were Hans and Nancy Duursma (Rutherglen) with 124.
Third with 122 points were Bill and Lorraine Sztynda (Orbost), fourth with 120 points Darren and Di Mitchell (Jerilderie) and fifth were Phil and Lyn Willcock (Stawell) on 118 points.

Berrigan Friday’s nine hole winner was James Larter (41-6.5-34.5), runner-up was Peter Shand (42-7-35). James Larter won the putting with 13 putts and ball winners were Wayne Crew and Maria McDonell.
Sunday’s stableford winner was Barry Browne with 41 points, runner-up was Doug Cameron with 37 points, ball winners were Gail Browne 37 and Kura Goldsmith 37.
This Saturday and Sunday there will be a working bee to core the greens — 8am start both days. All help will be most welcome.
Finley Last Wednesday the men played for the final Hong Loch Restaurant voucher.
Leo McNamara with 44 points claimed the voucher. Matt Daniel was NTP on the 18th and balls went to Matt Daniel (39), Wayne Peasley (38), Bill Judd (38) and Beau Makkinga (38).
Barry Fahey with 19 stableford points stepped into the winners’ circle at the last nine hole comp on Thursday. Balls went to Jon Munro (18) and Beau Makkinga (17).

After a three-way countback it was Ross Lacy and Betty Cranston from Cobram/Barooga with 43 points who were second and Finley’s Beau Makkinga and Heather Daniel third with 43.
Men’s NTP on the 3rd was Brian Wilson (Jerilderie) and the 11th was John Bakker (Mooroopna). Ladies NTP on the 11th was Maree Ciavarella (Rich River) and on the 18th Jan Alborough (Stawell). Balls went to couples with 42 points or better.
Sunday was the Hehir Family Farms Stableford Day. Paul Pinnuck with 42 points took the men’s trophy, while the ladies’ winner was Heather Daniel with 44. NTP on the 18th was Doug Smith and on the 13th Pam Angove. Balls went to Merv Percy (40), Barry Fahey (39), Alan Hand, Bill Mansell (Cob/Bar) and Rand Wilson all with 38 points and Joanne Dean (33). Pam Angove received a NAGA trophy.
The final day of a long weekend of golf on Monday was the WD & AJ Lang Stroke event and it was Dave Brockie after countback with 72 net who took the men’s A grade trophy.
Leo McNamara who had 66 net was men’s B grade winner.
Helen Wastle’s 72 net gave her the ladies’ trophy and her 30 putts saw her claim the putting award. NTP on the 18th went to Rick Harris and balls went to Andrew Harding (69), Barry Fahey, Bill Judd, Alan Hand and Rick Harris all with 71 net and Janet Delmenico and Anne Harding each with 76. Hayden Lunn and Mary Polkinghorne claimed the NAGA trophies.
Players at the Thursday afternoon 9-hole competition during the month of October stand the chance of winning a trip to Sydney for the Australian Open.
This week stableford will be played on Saturday and the course will be closed on Sunday for the annual coring of the greens.
Tocumwal Monday and Tuesday last week saw the running of the Betty Senior Classic with full fields.
Monday results are A grade gross Helen Pascoe (Buninyong) 78; B grade gross Diana Bermingham (Box Hill) 91; C grade gross Joan Boyer (Barooga) 40; A grade net Anne Beveridge 74; B grade net Joan Burns 70.
Tuesday’s results were: A grade gross Janelle Sullivan (Leeton) 81; B grade gross Susan Oakley (Benalla) 91; C grade gross Rhonice Ferguson (Yarrawonga) 40; A grade net Lorraine Theofanis (Mornington) 72; B grade net Bev Kelly (Trafalgar) 69.
Thirty-six hole gross went to A grade Helen Pascoe 153, B grade Susan Oakley 185; 36 hole net went to Gayle Haberman (Heidelberg) 146, B grade Bev Kelly (Trafalgar) 148.
Last Wednesday saw 100 golfers playing the men’s two-man aggregate stableford from the White Markers with first place going to Trevor McCaw/Darren John with 79; second place went to Colin McNamara/Adam Purtill 78; 3rd Malcolm Hart/ Bruce McCallum with 77. NTP: Jim Williams 14th, Robert Burns 18th, Michael Cooper (Pro Pin $104), Eagle’s Nest went to Adam Purtill on the 15th President’s course.
Friday was the first round of our Spring Tournament with ladies par results Division 1 going to Gale Tyers with 2-up on countback from Jennie Howe; Division 2 went to Di Wood 6-up followed by Sue Holzman 2-up; Div. 3 went to Kath Lacey 3-up on c/b from Karen Hinkley.
NTP: Kerry Davey 2nd, Jennie Howe 17th.
Men’s par saw Division 1 going to Colin McNamara (square) on c/back from Benjamin Hallas; Div. 2 was won by John Crilly 5-up followed by Stephen Piggott 4-up; Jeffrey Innes was the Division 3 winner with 6-up ahead of Ronald Loveridge 5-up.
NTP: John Scott Colin Wearne 17th.
Sunday was stableford with ladies’ Division 1 winner Jenny Bauerle 37 points, followed by Christine Wilson 36; Marissa L’Estrange was the Division 2 winner with 39 pts on c/b from Nola Stacey; Dianne Dungan took out Division 3 with 40 pts followed by Rita Gazzola on 37. NTP: Helen Pascoe 2nd.
Men’s stableford results were Division 1 went to Barry Gook 41, with Charlie McKenna taking r/up with 39; Keith Stockdale was the Division 2 winner with 41 with Ross Clark r/up; John Simm was the Division 3 winner with 43 pts followed by Michael Wood on 41.
