Rich River pair claim three-day Chal­lenge

Out­back Chal­lenge The 18th Out­back Golf Chal­lenge be­gan with cou­ples from var­i­ous golf clubs in South Aus­tralia, Vic­to­ria, NSW and Queens­land, as well as the lo­cal clubs, hit­ting off in per­fect con­di­tions for the Mixed 4BBB event played at the Fin­ley, Jer­ilderie and Ber­ri­gan cour­ses over the Oc­to­ber hol­i­day week­end.

On Satur­day, Fin­ley hosted the first day of the Chal­lenge, and it was Hans and Nancy Du­ursma from Ruther­glen with 44 sta­ble­ford points who claimed the day’s tro­phy.

Af­ter a three-way count­back it was Ross Lacy and Betty Cranston from Co­bram/Ba­rooga with 43 points who were run­ners-up, with Fin­ley’s Beau Makkinga and Heather Daniel also with 43 points in third.

Sun­day saw the sec­ond round played at Jer­ilderie.

Bill Shep­herd ( Karumba Qld) and Di Ruther­ford (Jer­ilderie) with 42 points were the day’s win­ners. Terry and Yvonne Tis­dale (Pak­en­ham) with 41 points were run­ner­sup and Ge­off and Jan All­bor­ough (Stawell) with 40 fin­ished in third.

The third and fi­nal day moved to Ber­ri­gan on Mon­day where Peter and Lyn James (Rich River) with 46 points were the day’s win­ners.

Bill and Lor­raine Sz­tynda (Or­bost) with 44 points were run­ners-up and Phil and Lyn Will­cock (Stawell) fin­ished in third.

Af­ter the three days the out­right win­ners with 125 points were Peter and Lyn James (Rich River) and sec­ond were Hans and Nancy Du­ursma (Ruther­glen) with 124.

Third with 122 points were Bill and Lor­raine Sz­tynda (Or­bost), fourth with 120 points Dar­ren and Di Mitchell (Jer­ilderie) and fifth were Phil and Lyn Will­cock (Stawell) on 118 points.

Ber­ri­gan Fri­day’s nine hole win­ner was James Larter (41-6.5-34.5), run­ner-up was Peter Shand (42-7-35). James Larter won the putting with 13 putts and ball win­ners were Wayne Crew and Maria McDonell.

Sun­day’s sta­ble­ford win­ner was Barry Browne with 41 points, run­ner-up was Doug Cameron with 37 points, ball win­ners were Gail Browne 37 and Kura Gold­smith 37.

This Satur­day and Sun­day there will be a work­ing bee to core the greens — 8am start both days. All help will be most wel­come.

Fin­ley Last Wed­nes­day the men played for the fi­nal Hong Loch Restau­rant voucher.

Leo Mc­Na­mara with 44 points claimed the voucher. Matt Daniel was NTP on the 18th and balls went to Matt Daniel (39), Wayne Peasley (38), Bill Judd (38) and Beau Makkinga (38).

Barry Fa­hey with 19 sta­ble­ford points stepped into the win­ners’ cir­cle at the last nine hole comp on Thurs­day. Balls went to Jon Munro (18) and Beau Makkinga (17).

On Satur­day, Fin­ley hosted the first day of the Daw­mac In­dus­tries 2018 Out­back Golf Chal­lenge, and it was Hans and Nancy Du­ursma from Ruther­glen with 44 sta­ble­ford points who claimed the day’s tro­phy.

Af­ter a three-way count­back it was Ross Lacy and Betty Cranston from Co­bram/Ba­rooga with 43 points who were sec­ond and Fin­ley’s Beau Makkinga and Heather Daniel third with 43.

Men’s NTP on the 3rd was Brian Wil­son (Jer­ilderie) and the 11th was John Bakker (Mooroopna). Ladies NTP on the 11th was Ma­ree Ci­avarella (Rich River) and on the 18th Jan Al­bor­ough (Stawell). Balls went to cou­ples with 42 points or bet­ter.

Sun­day was the He­hir Fam­ily Farms Sta­ble­ford Day. Paul Pin­nuck with 42 points took the men’s tro­phy, while the ladies’ win­ner was Heather Daniel with 44. NTP on the 18th was Doug Smith and on the 13th Pam An­gove. Balls went to Merv Percy (40), Barry Fa­hey (39), Alan Hand, Bill Mansell (Cob/Bar) and Rand Wil­son all with 38 points and Joanne Dean (33). Pam An­gove re­ceived a NAGA tro­phy.

The fi­nal day of a long week­end of golf on Mon­day was the WD & AJ Lang Stroke event and it was Dave Brockie af­ter count­back with 72 net who took the men’s A grade tro­phy.

Leo Mc­Na­mara who had 66 net was men’s B grade win­ner.

He­len Was­tle’s 72 net gave her the ladies’ tro­phy and her 30 putts saw her claim the putting award. NTP on the 18th went to Rick Har­ris and balls went to An­drew Hard­ing (69), Barry Fa­hey, Bill Judd, Alan Hand and Rick Har­ris all with 71 net and Janet Del­menico and Anne Hard­ing each with 76. Hay­den Lunn and Mary Polk­inghorne claimed the NAGA tro­phies.

Play­ers at the Thurs­day af­ter­noon 9-hole com­pe­ti­tion dur­ing the month of Oc­to­ber stand the chance of win­ning a trip to Sydney for the Aus­tralian Open.

This week sta­ble­ford will be played on Satur­day and the course will be closed on Sun­day for the an­nual cor­ing of the greens.

Tocumwal Mon­day and Tues­day last week saw the run­ning of the Betty Se­nior Clas­sic with full fields.

Mon­day re­sults are A grade gross He­len Pas­coe (Buniny­ong) 78; B grade gross Diana Ber­ming­ham (Box Hill) 91; C grade gross Joan Boyer (Ba­rooga) 40; A grade net Anne Bev­eridge 74; B grade net Joan Burns 70.

Tues­day’s re­sults were: A grade gross Janelle Sul­li­van (Lee­ton) 81; B grade gross Su­san Oak­ley (Be­nalla) 91; C grade gross Rhon­ice Fer­gu­son (Yar­ra­wonga) 40; A grade net Lor­raine The­o­fa­nis (Morn­ing­ton) 72; B grade net Bev Kelly (Trafal­gar) 69.

Thirty-six hole gross went to A grade He­len Pas­coe 153, B grade Su­san Oak­ley 185; 36 hole net went to Gayle Haber­man (Hei­del­berg) 146, B grade Bev Kelly (Trafal­gar) 148.

Last Wed­nes­day saw 100 golfers play­ing the men’s two-man ag­gre­gate sta­ble­ford from the White Mark­ers with first place go­ing to Trevor McCaw/Dar­ren John with 79; sec­ond place went to Colin Mc­Na­mara/Adam Pur­till 78; 3rd Mal­colm Hart/ Bruce Mc­Cal­lum with 77. NTP: Jim Wil­liams 14th, Robert Burns 18th, Michael Cooper (Pro Pin $104), Ea­gle’s Nest went to Adam Pur­till on the 15th Pres­i­dent’s course.

Fri­day was the first round of our Spring Tour­na­ment with ladies par re­sults Di­vi­sion 1 go­ing to Gale Ty­ers with 2-up on count­back from Jen­nie Howe; Di­vi­sion 2 went to Di Wood 6-up fol­lowed by Sue Holz­man 2-up; Div. 3 went to Kath Lacey 3-up on c/b from Karen Hink­ley.

NTP: Kerry Davey 2nd, Jen­nie Howe 17th.

Men’s par saw Di­vi­sion 1 go­ing to Colin Mc­Na­mara (square) on c/back from Ben­jamin Hal­las; Div. 2 was won by John Crilly 5-up fol­lowed by Stephen Pig­gott 4-up; Jef­frey Innes was the Di­vi­sion 3 win­ner with 6-up ahead of Ron­ald Loveridge 5-up.

NTP: John Scott Colin Wearne 17th.

Sun­day was sta­ble­ford with ladies’ Di­vi­sion 1 win­ner Jenny Bauerle 37 points, fol­lowed by Chris­tine Wil­son 36; Marissa L’Es­trange was the Di­vi­sion 2 win­ner with 39 pts on c/b from Nola Stacey; Dianne Dun­gan took out Di­vi­sion 3 with 40 pts fol­lowed by Rita Gaz­zola on 37. NTP: He­len Pas­coe 2nd.

Men’s sta­ble­ford re­sults were Di­vi­sion 1 went to Barry Gook 41, with Char­lie McKenna tak­ing r/up with 39; Keith Stock­dale was the Di­vi­sion 2 win­ner with 41 with Ross Clark r/up; John Simm was the Di­vi­sion 3 win­ner with 43 pts fol­lowed by Michael Wood on 41.
