Finley withdraw from Premier Division
The upcoming 2018/19 season will mark the first time in 12 years that Finley won’t be playing in the Premier Division in the Murray Valley Cricket League.
The club will only play with a Division One and Division Two side, however will field a stand alone Under 16s side.
Last year the Under 16s side combined with Tocumwal and Jerilderie, with some Jerilderie cricketers still a part of the Cats’ squad.
Finley will be without former captain Chris Shaw, Daniel Hibberd and Matt Wilson in the upcoming season, who have all joined the Tocumwal Premier Division side.
The Division One team is expected to be a younger side with a couple of veterans mixed into the line-up.
Captain Russell Anderson said the club decided to take a step back from Premier Division to provide better opportunities for the younger player.
‘‘We haven’t won a game for two seasons and that’s not great when it comes to maintaining players.
‘‘As a club we felt moving down to Division One would be better for these kids to enjoy their cricket, give them an exposure to winning and help their confidence.
‘‘We will eventually return to Premier Division but I expect us to play in Division One for at least another two years to see where we’re at,’’ Anderson said.
The key players for the Division One side will be Ian Armer and Adnan Malik plus developing players Darcy Webb, Cougar McGrath, Duncan Clarke and Cameron Isedale.
Anderson added it’s hard to asses how the club will go in its first game against Katunga on Saturday.
‘‘It’ll be a bit touch and go as the season was brought forward a week and there will be a few players missing, but we will field a side.
‘‘Because we didn’t have a Division One side last year I can’t say how we’ll perform until we’ve come up against the competition.’’
Finley will travel to the Katunga Recreation Reserve for its first round 40 over match at 1pm on Saturday..
