Finley started their Murray Valley Cricket Association Division One campaign on the wrong foot with a three wicket road trip loss to Katunga on Saturday.

Cats skipper Russell Anderson won the toss and had no hesitation in batting first.

This decision was a positive one with the Cats openers Cougar McGrath (12) and recruit Adnan Malik (12) getting off to a flying start seeing the score race to 31 in the fourth over before Malik departed.

McGrath quickly followed and it was left to Anderson and Justin Crowley (23) to steady the ship.

With the run rate flying along at five runs per over, wickets continued to fall, and the Cats found themselves in trouble at 5/62.

Duncan Clarke (7) and Anthony King (17) put on 20 for the sixth wicket partnership.

With Clarke sent back to the rooms, the Cats could not recuperate and were dismissed in the 23rd over for 91.

Finley were not going away without a fight despite defending a small total, having Katunga at 3/37 at the end of the eighth over with Darcy Webb (1/19 off six) and Damon Anderson (2/23 off four) making the early breakthrough.

King (4/29 off seven) was brought into the attack and had success immediately with the wicket of Daniel Henderson (14).

The Swans were making hard work of the chase falling to 6/67 in the 18th over; however, some lower order hitting saw the home side hit the winning runs in the 23rd over.

The Division One Cats are at home to Tocumwal for round two on Saturday while Division Two start their campaign on October 27 with a trip to Jerilderie..
