Big crowd enjoys ‘‘fantastic’’ race day
It’s the biggest day in the Southern Riverina and it certainly didn’t disappoint, with racegoers turning out in droves for the Berrigan Cup.
The Berrigan Race Club committee couldn’t have asked for a better day on Saturday, with constant sunshine and a full card of exciting country racing.
Patrons dressed their best with an amazing collection of colourful garments and headwear in the Fashions on the Field.
On the biggest day of the town’s racing calender, many in the crowd gathered in front of the big screen to take in the group racing in Melbourne including the $2 million Victorian Derby won by the Darren Weir-trained Extra Brut.
Race Club president Geoff Swann said he was thrilled with how the day panned out.
‘‘The overall day has been fantastic, just a dream day for the Berrigan Race Club.
‘‘Perfect weather after the bad days we had in the lead up, we’ve had a fantastic crowd who have been well-behaved.
‘‘The racing has been great, we’ve seen some very good horses win very stylishly,’’ Mr Swann said.
Other than a minor scuffle after the final race which lead to the ejection of some patrons, police said the crowd was on their best behaviour.
The Berrigan Cup race meeting drew thousands from across the region but two special patrons came all the way from Geelong.
Geelong Cats star forward Tom Hawkins and his daughter Arabella returned to the local area for the biggest event in the Southern Riverina.
Mr Hawkins said he was just up for the Cup and it was a good chance to catch up with family and old friends adding that it was ‘‘nice to be back home for a few days’’.
He told the Southern Riverina News his first bet of the day was on ‘‘race four, number four — Autocrat.’’
The six-year-old gelding and second favourite unfortunately finished seventh.
