Six Wildcats in Bushies squad

Southern Riverina news - - LOCAL CLASSIES -

The Finley Wildcats’ dominance in the Shepparton and Districts Junior Football League Youth Girls competition has been reflected in the Murray Bushrangers’ selection for their 2019 Girls Pre-Season squad selection.

Six premiership winning Wildcats players — Hayley Doohan, Theodora Miaoudis, Holly Robinson, Kayla Smith, Abby Favell and Paris Creeley — have all been selected to train with the 46-person Bushies squad.

The girls were all nominated for the squad, being picked out of a group of 150 girls to participate in a trial game in September.

The trial game saw 100 girls showcase their skills before being cut down to the squad of 46.

Wildcats young-guns Olivia Ciccolini, Lily Sharp and Mikayla Jones were also selected for the Bushies Under 16s girls side.

Wildcats coach Jorja Daniel said she was extremely proud that nine of her players had been talent identified for the Bushies. ‘‘How good is it,’’ she said. ‘‘I could only nominate four girls at each age group so to have nine picked is just amazing.

‘‘It was a good opportunity just to send the girls to train and play but to have six selected amongst 110 of some of the best Under 18s footballers is just unbelievable.

‘‘To think that we only started the girls team two and a half years ago for these kind of results is just mind blowing.

‘‘The squad will get cut down again before the 2019 TAC Cup season, but the girls should be proud of the fact that they’ve made it this far even if they don’t make the final cut.’’

Daniel will once again fill an assistant coaching role for the Bushrangers girls this year, with Wildcats assistant coach Paul Evans also joining her.

The side will be coached by Tim Madden, with the girls having their first training session as part of the squad at Wangaratta on Sunday.

Wildcats premiership winning defender Theodora Miaoudis said the first training session was an amazing experience.

‘‘At training we did the vertical leap, AFL agility test, 20m sprints, 3x500m time trials and a change of direction test off each foot,’’ she said.

‘‘We also got an introduction to what the programme is about, and introduced to the people that'll be helping us grow like the physiotherapist, development coaches, assistant coaches and high performance coaches.

‘‘Ever since the league was introduced I've dreamed of playing in the AFLW.

‘‘Hopefully I can do enough in the preseason to earn a spot on the final playing squad with the Bushies and give myself the best chance of being drafted next year.’’

Finley footballer Ben Ashley-Cooper has also been selected as part of the Murray Bushrangers TAC Cup Under 18s training squad.

A squad of 90 has been selected with the first training being held on Sunday, November 18 at the Norm Minns Oval Wangaratta.
