Visitors flock to Town Beach

- Anne Jones

Tocumwal’s famous Town Beach opened just in time for the Victorian school holiday influx of visitors last week.

And a week later there was still an average of 20 caravans and motor homes using the area.

Some are overnight stayers and move north the next day but others decided to enjoy the area for a bit longer, which is good for our tourism industry which has been badly hit by the virus.

Local caravan parks have also been having increased bookings, but unfortunately this may change with the Victorian/NSW border now being closed.

June saw many changes to the restrictions that we have all been subjected to since early March, because of COVID-19 pandemic.

The population of Australia went from almost total lockdown to things freeing up a lot.

The main restriction that remains in place for NSW, with regards to people getting together, is the four square metre rule or being 1.5m apart.

This rule which is so important for our protection will be with us for some time yet.

The people of Tocumwal are to be congratulated on the great job they have done throughout this difficult time.

It has been great that there were no recorded cases of Coronavirus in our town in recent months after getting off to a rocky start with some imported cases.

To keep it that way we all still need to be on our guard and practice good hygiene and avoid large crowds.

Health authorities has been proactive in protecting the Tocumwal community, sending the Mobile COVID-19 testing van to the area last week.

They were in Tocumwal on Thursday from 12.30pm to 4.30pm and were well patronised by all ages.

On the third Thursday of June, Tocumwal Local Health Advisory Committee was able to meet in the MPS Community Centre.

The next online meeting will be for the LHAC forum on July 23.

LHAC forums have always been a great way of networking amongst those who work for their local health communities and usually meant a night away.

This forum will be a condensed and stay at home version focusing on resilience.

LHAC is seeking people who are willing to give an hour a month to advocate for their local community.

They will be connecting with local communities about health priorities and being a voice for planning and evaluation of services.

They will help provide support to local health services and promote health literacy and wellbeing in their local communities.

To become a member of your local LHAC you will need to complete an application form and have the required screening processes necessary for the particular activity or group you would like to participate in.

Call at the MPS reception for more details on how to apply or go on line at the Murrumbidgee Local Health District website https://www.mlhd.health.nsw.gov.au/get-involved/local-health-advisory-committee-(lhac)

Amelie Pate of Tocumwal Public School reports that the Student Representative Council organised students to make cards for the elderly.

Because of COVID-19, the students thought the residents might have been getting a little lonely so they wanted to let them know that they were thinking of them.

Each class gave a card to at least three residents. The children hope the residents enjoy the cards.

The children are now on holidays from the three Tocumwal schools.

As you well know they are an excitable bunch and very lively.

Please drive carefully and especially in Deniliquin St near the post office and obey the pedestrian crossing rules, as this area has been noted as high risk during pre and post school times.

An announcement on a new date for a working bee is yet to be made.

The Bushland Bravados singing group now has a Facebook page.

Despite having to wait until after the school holidays to start singing the group has been very busy behind the scenes.

Phil Couchman has organised a closed page where members can access meeting dates and times and eventually Kellie may even upload music for them to practise.

If you are interested in joining this group go to the page and register.

See next week’s Toc Tells for updates.
