Labor MP for Brand Madeleine King has responded to claims over whether she renounced foreign citizenship before nominating for election.

Ms King told the Telegraph she renounced her British Citizenship in May 2016 — before Federal election nominations closed on June 9.

“It’s important to me the community knows my status,” she said Ms King, who was born in Calista, said her father was naturalised as an Australian long before she was born.

“My father was a duel citizen, so that made me one too,” she said.

“When people are talking about parliamentarians giving up their citizenships — of any other country— it’s no small thing because it’s a connection to their family.”
