GRANTS TO HELP GROUPS

FROM fire-pit get-togethers to Melbourne Cup Luncheons, craft groups and yoga classes, the Eukey Hall is a happy hub of community activity and local friendships. Jane Kerridge, secretary of the Eukey Hall Association, said the hall was a focal point for locals to meet and for welcoming travellers and regular return visitors to the region.

“We want to try and get locals together, and welcome new people who move to the area. Even people who just come for the weekend like to get involved, and we like to have them,” Ms Kerridge said.

She said the hall was on a corner block near busy roads and people worried about the safety of children.

Ms Kerridge said a Southern Downs Regional Council grant of $6047 would be used to fence the property, an investment which “has been on the wish list for a while”.

She said the much-loved hall’s flooring and kitchen had recently been renovated, and it was “really satisfying” to see the facility being so well used and new people embracing the social get-togethers.

Friday afternoon drinks are held once a month

(every second Friday from 5pm) and there’s a camp oven with a good outside area and fire pit which is the scene of regular functions throughout the year.

“Whenever we can organise it, we have at least two or three dinners a year, plus a Christmas party with Santa arriving on a quad bike or tractor.”

Ms Kerridge, who has an email list she sends out to keep people informed of activities, said a new craft group had recently started meeting at the hall, and weekly yoga classes were held from 5.30pm Wednesdays

The association also started a newsletter, Eukey Hall Happenings.

“I think it’s great as having the hall helps build community support and getting to know your neighbours, and the social aspect is really good.”
