BASKETBALL: A one-off game against the Warwick Wildcats may have sparked the Giants’ wish to join a new basketball competition.

While this season’s local competition has concluded, plans for a regional competition have been released.

Teams from Toowoomba, Gatton and Warwick are confirmed starters for the inaugural South-West Queensland Basketball League, or Big Q, which starts on October 14.

The Giants are now asking players to voice their interest in joining this new competition that could give basketball across the region a timely boost.

Stanthorpe Basketball Association president Damian Petrie said if the players’ interest was there, they would be keen to play in the competition.

“We absolutely want to enter teams,” he said.

“But we are checking player availability at the moment.”

Petrie said they would like to enter under 18s and A-grade teams and that being part of the competition would be a great experience for all players.

If enough players got together to commit to Big Q, four to five games could be seen played in Stanthorpe.

The competition is set to run for eight to 10 weeks over the coming months.

Teams have the chance to join as organisers expect to finalise entrants at the end of September.

Big Q organiser Pop Dickerson said the basketball community needed to get behind it.

The league aims to give players increased exposure to quality competition standard of play and improve the skills of players.

It is the latest of numerous attempts to establish a sustainable regional league.

Prize money will be on offer for the men’s and women’s A-grade and reserve-grade competitions.

Big Q marketing and PR manager Despena Dickerson said she could see long-term benefits coming out of this competition for the whole region.
