Now is time for gun reform
THIS week we witnessed something so unbelievable that it belongs in a Hollywood script with a hero emerging at the end and saving the day.
Unfortunately, there was no saving the day when a lone gunman took aim at a crowd of people enjoying a concert in Las Vegas.
By now everyone has heard the news and asked the question why?
I don’t have the answers. What I do know is that after hearing there were three Stanthorpe ex-pats in Las Vegas that evening, and after seeing so many international names among the list of wounded, the issue of gun control is much bigger than the second amendment that many US citizens hold so dear.
So, what is this second amendment? The American constitution states that “A well-regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed”.
Well, I am going to call it – what a load of rubbish.
Maybe back in 1791, when there were no automatic guns, this may have been applicable but in 2017, I don’t think so.
I am fully aware that the chances of Mr Trump seeing my column are non-existent but for what it is worth, here I go.
Mr Trump, I do not stand by your statement that you will talk about gun control laws as time goes on.
The time to talk about it is now. This tragedy is horrific and if you do not act now I fear that your congress will water down whatever bill eventually gets passed or your National Rifle Association will use its back pocket to fund some scare campaign.
I also do not stand by your second amendment, that it is the right of the people to keep and bear arms. What gives anyone (other than the military) the right to bear an automatic rifle, let alone 42 different firearms.
These automatic guns are weapons of mass destruction and, as seen in Las Vegas, have taken home grown terrorism to a new and even more scary level.
Mr Trump, there is no better time than NOW to stand up and use your power on this issue.
You are not only dealing with the lives of your own citizens. This is something that affects all those who travel to the country that you call the greatest in the world.
