The Summit Men’s Bowls

Stanthorpe Border Post - - SPORT -

LAST Saturday The Summit division one SDMDBA champions were in Chinchilla contesting the Group 3 State Pennant District Finals.

In the semi-final against the Downs District champions, Toowoomba started the better, however, the summit pushed on during the last eight ends to record a convincing win with three rink wins and overall margin of plus-25 shots.

The other semi-final between Condamine district champions Chinchilla and Maroona district champions Roma was a real cliffhanger, with Roma winning on the last bowl of the match.

The final between The Summit and Roma was played over the first 45 ends in pouring rain with Roma holding a 15-shot overall lead.

Over the last 18 ends in clear conditions on a heavy track The Summit was able to cut back the deficit. However, the Roma road train men pushed on by their very enthusiastic supporters were able to finish the stronger with two rink wins, one loss and win the final with a seven-shot margin and advance to the last eight state finals.

Congratulations to our journeymen (total round road trip of seven hours): Joe Straatman, Owen O’Brien, David Stibbard, Mick Mills, Brian Wilmot, Paul Zamprogno, Michael Sweeney, Tyler Sweeney, Rodney Newlands, Peter Ayrest, Darren Stanley and pennant team captain Roberto Capelli, who was very pleased by The Summit’s effort on a tough day, performing above expectations and representing our district and their club in great spirit and true sportsmanship. Well done, men.

The Giants fought hard but were undone by the Warwick Wildcats.
