LNP grabs over 40 per cent of vote to hold seat
THE Southern Downs has a new member of parliament.
While the Electoral Commission of Queensland is yet to announce a winner, LNP candidate James Lister and his opposition concede he will inevitably be proclaimed the new member.
It brings and end to an exhaustive 10 month campaign for Mr Lister, his family and supporters and ensures the LNP legacy lives on in the region post Lawrence Springborg.
“I’m delighted to have this opportunity and I’m very grateful that the people of Southern Downs have placed their trust in me,” he said.
“I just want to hit the ground running and work really hard to prove to them I was worthy of their trust.”
While it hasn’t been officially declared, after polling over 40 per cent of the vote, Mr Lister said the real work would start now.
“We want to be abundantly cautious about this and not stand on the Electoral Commission’s toes. They’re the ones who make the call on who has won, but we think at this stage, we’re confident the LNP will hold the Southern Downs.
“I’d like to be accepted as someone who makes sure the interests of the people in Southern Downs... the primary producers, small businesses, towns people, families and pensioners... that I’m someone you can rely on.”
He has some things on his wish list going forward and infrastructure plays a big part in his vision for the future.
“Whilst we may or may not be in government I’ll still work hard to get those things done.”
Mr Lister paid special tribute to his wife, Belinda, who’s been by his side throughout the arduous campaign.
“Belinda’s been outstanding. She’s worked enormously hard in all sorts of roles and supported me amazingly. It’s great to have a partner in this.
“A shout out too to hundreds of members of the LNP who helped in this campaign. I’m deeply grateful.”
Belinda herself is keen to get to work and excited about playing her part.
“We were both stationed in the Air Force and both given that up to come and work in the Southern Downs and we see James’ role very much as a partnership. So I’ll be very active in the community.
“I’m thoroughly looking forward to doing that over the next couple years and the years to come,” she said.
