Local property takes out award
SOUTHERN Downs designer Ian Darnell of Nspire Planning and Design won the best designed residential dwelling under $500,000 in the Building Design Association of Qld Darling Downs 2018 awards.
The dwelling at 15 Minna Street, Stanthorpe, featured excellent use of light and space, innovative building materials and features that met the needs of the client.
“The client wanted a reasonable sized garden but the site was only 979sq m and narrow, so the house covers the width of the block and uses a second storey,” Mr Darnell said. “But for easy living the residents can live on the ground floor as the second storey comprises a guest bedroom, craft space, storage room and a guest bathroom.”
To start their ‘Grand Designs’ journey, the owners utilised the services of Nick Sweet of Altitude 950 to get a concept design for a house that related the landscape and climate while also meeting the needs for single storey living within a two storey design.
“Nick understood how a house should flow and how adjacent spaces could be given a different feel based on room size, light, aspect and view,” home owner Stephen Tancred said.
“Being a local he knows the Granite Belt climate and seasons and we greatly appreciated his enthusiasm for the project.”
The house was built by local master builder RB and RM Einam using local tradesman. The quality finishes were a factor in encouraging the owners to allow the house’s entry in the prestigious awards.
Most of the garden is at the rear of the house and incorporates many large rocks that define it as a true Granite Belt landscape.
However a major greening feature is a central protected garden at the home’s entrance, surrounded by glass on three sides and offering intimate garden views from many areas of the house.
Mr Tancred praised Rylan Jurd and his team at Southern Downs Bricklaying and Concreting who helped sculpture the rocky block into a well landscaped home.
