Champs head to Cairns

ATH­LET­ICS: Nine lo­cal ath­letes aged 10 to 12 will be head­ing to Cairns in late Oc­to­ber for the state school cham­pi­onships.

Thirty-two stu­dents from across the South­ern Downs were se­lected, with the Gran­ite Belt hav­ing healthy rep­re­sen­ta­tion.

Hun­dreds of stu­dents from around Queens­land will de­scend on Bar­low Park for the sport­ing spec­ta­cle.

The top three in most events have been se­lected, with two from each of the tetrathlons. Nine years ath­letes com­peted at the Dar­ling Downs cham­pi­onships but won’t rep­re­sent the re­gional team at the state cham­pi­onships un­til next year.

After win­ning a na­tional medal last year, Braithen Scott from Texas won the 11 years tetrathlon to give him three gold and one sil­ver. Points are awarded for times and dis­tances in four tetrathlon events – 100m, 800m, long jump and shot put.

Nine years ath­letes com­peted but aren’t el­i­gi­ble to go for re­gional se­lec­tion un­til next year.

Qual­i­fiers:

■ Alex Water­worth – 2nd in 800m.

■ Katie-lee Jansink – 2nd in dis­cus.

■ Ni­co­lene Sny­man – 3rd in dis­cus.

■ Braithen Scott – 1st in high jump, 1st in long jump, 2nd in shot put, 1st in tetrathlon.

■ Ja­cob Kent – 2nd in high jump, 2nd dis­cus.

■ Harry Wren – 2nd in long jump.

■ Katie-lee Jansink – 2nd in shot put.

■ Lily Savakov – 2nd in shot put.

■ Luther Gainer – 1st in shot put.
