Champs head to Cairns
ATHLETICS: Nine local athletes aged 10 to 12 will be heading to Cairns in late October for the state school championships.
Thirty-two students from across the Southern Downs were selected, with the Granite Belt having healthy representation.
Hundreds of students from around Queensland will descend on Barlow Park for the sporting spectacle.
The top three in most events have been selected, with two from each of the tetrathlons. Nine years athletes competed at the Darling Downs championships but won’t represent the regional team at the state championships until next year.
After winning a national medal last year, Braithen Scott from Texas won the 11 years tetrathlon to give him three gold and one silver. Points are awarded for times and distances in four tetrathlon events – 100m, 800m, long jump and shot put.
Nine years athletes competed but aren’t eligible to go for regional selection until next year.
■ Alex Waterworth – 2nd in 800m.
■ Katie-lee Jansink – 2nd in discus.
■ Nicolene Snyman – 3rd in discus.
■ Braithen Scott – 1st in high jump, 1st in long jump, 2nd in shot put, 1st in tetrathlon.
■ Jacob Kent – 2nd in high jump, 2nd discus.
■ Harry Wren – 2nd in long jump.
■ Katie-lee Jansink – 2nd in shot put.
■ Lily Savakov – 2nd in shot put.
■ Luther Gainer – 1st in shot put.
