Dispersed family clan reunites
Wilkinsons roll in for a get together
Connection to family diminishes, along with the knowledge of who we are.
— Jim Wilkinson
THE Wilkinson clan has descended on the area for a long-awaited family reunion.
It’s been some time since the family were last together, with the bulk of Saturday’s attendance a long way off being born when that occurred.
“It is now 38 years since the last get together of the Wilkinson family,” Jim Wilkinson said. “That was held in Shepparton, Victoria.
“This meeting saw family from the Northern Territory, Tasmania, Victoria and several locations across Queensland come to town.”
The family’s time in the country dates back as far as the early 1800s.
“The significant family history in Australia is documented from 1813 when the first of the family were involved in shipping from England,” Jim said.
“Some settled in Victoria – some set up butcher shops to supply meat to the goldfields, there were tailors, mining wardens, farmers and a member of the Victorian Parliament.
“There were several involved in World Wars 1 and 2,” he said.
“Today there are family members involved in a range of diverse interests and employment – local government, education, finance, art, farming, digital, medical, engineering fitness and more.”
Mr Wilkinson said the gathering gave the family a special opportunity to reconnect.
“As families mature and disperse through employment and many other reasons, the connection to family diminishes, along with the knowledge of who we are and where we came from.
“When that knowledge is lost, future generations will find it difficult to make connection, or be supported in time of need.
“It is the connection with family that gives individuals the sense of place and worth,” he said.
Mr Wilkinson paid tribute to a local organisation for helping cater the event.
“We are greatly appreciative of the support we had from the chaplaincy committee to cater for the event.”
