Chalking up success

Stirling Times - - News - Kate Leaver

TEEN drama series Chalk gives an insight into the world of elite gymnastics and its premiere has sold out two screenings at Event Cinemas Innaloo.

Chalk scriptwriter and gymnastics coach Shannon DurhamDique said she created the series after one of her students asked her to write a script.

“Aimed predominantly at the teenage audience, Chalk is a high-energy sports drama following the lives of five young elite gymnasts pursuing their dreams to be the best of the best and represent Australia,” she said.

“It deals with pushy parents and it goes into eating disorders and stresses that come with that life.

“I’ve been within the gymnastics world since I was six; I’ve now turned to acrobatics but I competed at a national level.”

Durham-Dique, who is an ECU Film Studies graduate, said the first screenings of the series at Event Cinemas Innaloo sold out two large screens.

“It is a TV series and we’ve had interest from a couple of producers to make it for television,” she said.

Director and ECU Film Studies graduate Zarah Lee Barrow said the Chalk team worked well under pressure with a shoestring budget.

“I wanted to show more dimension between the characters, not just the stereotypes,” she said.

“Shannon gave me lots to work with from her script – it was more about these different sides to the characters to see the insecurities behind some of those more competitive behaviours.”

Ms Durham-Dique said through its Facebook page Chalk had sparked interest in the eastern states and internationally.
