Klein leads charge for Mosman Park
THE second round of the men’s State Tennis League saw a replay of last year’s final when Hensman Park (HPTC) travelled to Mosman Park for another spirited encounter, with the latter delivering a thumping six rubbers, 12 sets and 72 games to 0-1-30.
Pre-match strategies surrounding the playing order finally saw Mosman Park’s Brydan Klein, ranked 304 in world singles, slotted in to beat a plucky Zack Itzstein 6-4, 6-1 in a high quality match played on hard court.
Klein (27), born in Rockingham, is a touring British professional.
Mosman Park’s classy Dom Bechard won the battle of the left-handers against HPTC’s Marco Comozzo 6-2, 6-2 while Brenton Bacon and Alex Downey completed the singles rout and Mosman Park won both doubles, but not before Rhys Johnson teamed with Itzstein to push Klein and Bechard in a tough three setter.
Up the coast, Bayswater scrambled their first points when rain stopped play for a draw against Peppermint Grove.
Mt Lawley recorded their first win for the season over an injury-depleted Dalkeith 42 and to complete the round, Cottesloe backed up their first round win over Dalkeith with a 4-1 win over King’s Park.
In the women’s league, all matches were one-sided as Royal Kings Park (RKPTC) continued their great early form and backed their first round win over Blue Gum with another strong win 5-1 over last year’s champions Cottesloe.
The addition of Bojana Bobusic has certainly added a new dynamic.
Blue Gum scored their first points of the season, beating City Beach 4-2 and Hensman Park beat North Beach 5-1.
The pick of the matches this week will be City Beach women hosting leaders RKPTC and Cottesloe hosting Mosman in the mens.
