Six of the best

NEW “world class” greens await some of the world’s best golfers for a fast-paced tournament in Karrinyup this week.

The second ISPS Handa World Super 6 Perth is at Lake Karrinyup Country Club from February 8 to 11.

Like Twenty20 is to cricket, the Super 6 competition is an innovative version of golf that combines 54 holes of traditional stroke play across the first three days and a six-hole knockout matchplay format on the final day to determine the winner.

Lake Karrinyup Country Club general manager Damon Lonnie said they experienced disease in the greens last year, so nine more greens were built.

“The new greens and bunkers are world class and will perform well,” Mr Lonnie said.

“The course has not materially changed although the new bunkering on the front nine is quite different to the previous style.”

The final nine greens will be replaced after the event.

The competition will feature reigning champion Brett Rumford, of Royal Perth Gold Club, defending his title against local and international players, including world number 15 Tyrell Hatton, 2016 US Masters champion Danny Willett and former world number one Lee Westwood.

“The quality of golf will be first class and I know the new format will interest many people,” Mr Lonnie said.

“The tours have some exciting activities going on throughout the week, in addition to great golf, so there will be plenty to see and do.”

Mr Lonnie said he enjoyed seeing members get involved as volunteers and show off the course to the world.

“We have significant experience in hosting major events and believe it is our role to support the promotion of golf in WA,” he said.

“Everyone takes great pride in hosting the event and our team members, whether they work on course or in the clubhouse, thoroughly enjoy the experience and the opportunity to open up our facilities.”
