Mums get fighting fit

Stirling Times - - Stirling Notices -

A FORMER professional boxer is helping new mothers regain their fitness in Watermans Bay.

Erin McGowan, the 2010 World Boxing Organisation women’s lightweight champion, runs boxing classes for mothers from her Watermans Bay studio.

She said boxing was an ideal activity for them as it combined physical and mental elements.

“The fitness component comes from learning proper boxing techniques which will naturally work the core, the glutes and the abs, which are the areas that most women want focus on,” she said.

“Then there is the mental element where you are totally busting stress and gaining a real sense of strength and personal power.

“The combination of a workout for the body and mind gives these mums a real boost and a sense of accomplishment Erin McGowan (far left) runs a boxing class for mums. Babies optional but welcome. when they finish each session.”

A mother herself, McGowan encouraged women to bring their babies along to the sessions.

“They are all pretty chilled out babies and the fact that their mums can get in a workout and still keep a close eye on what their children are doing makes a busy life just that bit easier,” she said.

“Fitness boxing can be adapted to suit everyone and there doesn’t need to be a sweaty boxing ring or punching bag in sight.”
