Forget the baby books and avalanche of wellmeaning advice. Young mothers can learn the most about parenting by simply focusing on their babies, according to US experts.

Researchers at the School of Social Service Administration (SSA) in the US, who work with first-time mothers, say mums who regularly talk to their infants and watch them respond to their voice and actions will build their parenting confidence quicker than by discussing parenting with another adult or by reading a book.

The SSA also says long-term home visitation help and familial support is vital in helping young women to build their confidence as mothers.
