advice “I’ve been feeling very down, but I’m embarrassed to talk to my friends about it” In this short paragraph, you have said quite a lot. It sounds like you suffer from some perfectionism and a slight fear of negative evaluation, which are both common. If we keep striving for perfection and worry too much about what others think of us, it can definitely bring us down. There are many strategies that you could explore in therapy, but I understand you have been raised to think professional help is a waste of time and money. You could try an online course instead, such as the excellent programs at This Way Up (thiswayup.org.au). Through this, you could address some unhelpful thought patterns. However, I’d really encourage you to open up a bit more to close friends. Being vulnerable with a few trusted pals will hopefully deepen your friendships. Close connections with others definitely improves our mood and self-worth. You could also look at balancing your life out more. How much fun do you have? When do you laugh? When are you creative or spiritual? When we are really busy with work and focused on life goals, we can lose sight of the lighter side of life. GOT AN ISSUE FOR JO TO TACKLE? Send your question to firstname.lastname@example.org I’ve been feeling very down lately. There isn’t one thing I can attribute it to – I think it’s a build-up of feeling like I’m not meeting my life goals, and having a busy job and also not having a partner at the moment. I’m feeling a lot of pressure to be perfect. I would like to go see a psychologist or a counsellor, but I come from a culture where therapy is seen as a waste of time and money. It’s so ingrained in me I should solve my own problems that I’m even embarrassed to talk to my friends about all of this. I don’t know what to do.
