Sunday Herald Sun - Escape - - WELCOME CLARITY BY SUN LEI -

Ihave a great mate who frequently travels overseas on seriously enviable holidays with his wife. Last year, they did a luxury safari jaunt around Africa. Other years, they’ve taken up residence in the French countryside or availed themselves of the famed views of Italy’s Cinque Terre.

They’ve done house swaps that have allowed to them to live like locals in Maui and have ticked the Maldives off their holiday wish list.

My friend’s other half is such a gold-star planner I’m sure she’d give a professional travel agent a run for their money. She is scrupulous with the timing, budgeting and choice of places to go and things to do.

When they return, the tales of their adventures are without the snags – dodgy dinners, arriving at a museum on the day it’s closed, missed flights due to misreading tickets, and so forth – a less organised couple might encounter. They arrive home with the words: “Holidays! Never had a bad one.”

What I also love about their trips is that they enjoy them so much that they immediately start planning the next one on their return while simultaneously creating a book of the one they’ve just returned from. It’s a constant state of looking back with fondness and anticipating what new adventures await.

Next on their list is Canada. I’ll let you know their tips for making the most of their annual leave.
