THE OLD WORLD ORDER
My nana, Kit, used to call her friends “the girls with the granny faces”. It was such a lovely descriptor of eighty and ninetysomething women who, despite their wrinkles, still felt very youthful in outlook and weren’t going to let an annual change in age get the better of them.
My other grandma, Claire, was similarly inclined and would happily pack a bag and set off on a trip whenever an opportunity presented itself.
Then there was the 75-year-old woman I sat next to recently on a flight from the Middle East. She was returning, solo, from a fourweek trip that took in Africa, Turkey and Morocco. Next on her agenda was an expedition cruise to Antarctica.
This spirit of adventure and inquisitiveness is a mindset the travel industry is more than pleased to nurture as it offers more and more itineraries to suit those very lucky travellers with the time and money to see the world.
So, if you’ve always wanted to go to (insert name of dream destination here), visit your travel agent this week and get them to help make your travel wishes come true.
Earlier this year, I had the rare opportunity to sail on a new Silversea ship. One morning while taking in the Mediterranean sunshine, I came across this cobbler on deck making sandals and loafers to order. Just one of the many luxurious touches had to offer.
