MUCH ADO IN MELBOURNE
Last year, England celebrated the 400th anniversary of the death of its most famous playwright, William Shakespeare. Now, Melbourne is counting down the days until a full-scale temporary working replica of Shakespeare’s Globe theatre appears in the Royal Botanical Gardens to take theatregoers back in time.
A travelling festival of four plays – As You Like It, Much Ado About Nothing, Othello and Henry V – will run from September 21 to November 12 in the Pop-Up Globe.
Set up near the Sidney Myer Music Bowl, the three-storey, 16-sided, 900person theatre is based on the design of the second Shakespeare’s Globe built in 1614 in Southwark after the first theatre burned down in 1613.
The project originated in Auckland last year to mark the Shakespeare anniversary and it attracted about 100,000 people. More than 30,000 tickets have been sold already for the shows in Melbourne. POPUPGLOBE.COM.AU
INFINITY AND BEYOND
Fans of Buzz Lightyear, Woody the cowboy and company will be keen to visit the most recently announced addition to Walt Disney World Resort in Florida.
Toy Story Land, a magical new land located in the larger-than-life setting of Andy’s backyard, is to open at the theme park next US summer.
There, guests will think they’ve been shrunk to the size of Woody and Buzz as they are surrounded by oversized toys from the blockbuster animated movie. The 4ha new land features two new attractions alongside giant building blocks, game board pieces and the toys and characters of the beloved Toy Story movies.
Slinky Dog Dash will be a family coaster attraction and Alien Swirling Saucers features the famous little green aliens from the movie.
The team behind Sydney’s Reuben Hills cafe, Paramount Coffee Project, Seven Seeds and Bondi Hall are turning their creative talents to a hotel. The 29-bedroom Paramount House Hotel is set to open early next year on Commonwealth St, on the border of the city and Surry Hills, as a “neighbourhood hotel” delivering a “rich, layered, local experience”.
It will straddle two newly connected buildings, with the hotel’s entrance and lobby inside Paramount House (originally built to be the Australian headquarters of Paramount Picture Studios).
Along with guest rooms, a dining concept from the team behind Ester restaurant will be in the adjoining 76 Commonwealth St, Paramount’s former film storage warehouse.
Most of the bedrooms will have a terrace space and Aesop products will grace the bathrooms. PARAMOUNTHOUSEHOTEL.COM
YARRA VALLEY GATEWAY
Melbourne is also getting a new hotel, but sooner and on the fringes of the city.
Sage Hotel Ringwood, set on top of Eastland Shopping Centre in Ringwood, will open in October in a suburb considered a gateway to the Yarra Valley and all its scenic and gourmet attractions.
The 120-room hotel’s Partake restaurant and High & Dry Bar will also showcase Yarra Valley produce and wine and spirits from local wineries, breweries and distilleries.
The Pop-Up Globe theatre in Melbourne will be the venue for Shakespeare’s plays from September 21 to November 12.
