ith the Tour de France in sight next month as in­spi­ra­tion, the ac­tive trav­eller’s thoughts might turn to hol­i­days on two wheels. And with its stun­ning land­scapes and net­work of trails, New Zealand’s South Is­land is made for cy­cling.

Ad­ven­ture South NZ’s six-day guided Alps to Ocean (pic­tured) itin­er­ary, from pic­turesque Lake Tekapo to Oa­maru on the Pa­cific, has be­come so pop­u­lar in the past three years that the ad­ven­ture spe­cial­ist has added a day to the ride for cy­clists want­ing to do the to­tal 310km trail.

The ex­tra day al­lows for start­ing the ride in the alpine playground of Ao­raki/Mt Cook Vil­lage, and in­cludes a short, pre-cy­cle, scenic heli­copter ride. En­tries are also open for this year’s Great Vic­to­rian Bike Ride, the big­gest multi-day bike ride/camp­ing hol­i­day in the South­ern Hemi­sphere. About 3200 riders are ex­pected to join the festival, which cov­ers the High Coun­try and Murray River re­gion, Novem­ber 24 to De­cem­ber 2, start­ing in Bright, north­east Victoria. Long-haul pas­sen­gers leav­ing Syd­ney can get a head­start on keep­ing their body fit for the flight ahead. Syd­ney Air­port has part­nered with Stretch Stu­dio to open a “flex­ol­ogy” cen­tre in­side the T1 In­ter­na­tional ter­mi­nal. Pas­sen­gers can have an as­sisted stretch­ing ses­sion be­fore board­ing to help pre­vent stiff­ness and sore­ness. Ner­vous fly­ers might also find a ses­sion, from $39 for 15 min­utes, re­lieves pre-flight anx­i­ety. The air­port al­ready has a ded­i­cated yoga room in T2 Do­mes­tic ter­mi­nal.
