There are certain people who Australians feel particularly strongly about – and Olivia Newton-john would appear to be one of them. If the reaction of those who stole a sneak peek at our cover shoot while walking past the Stellar office this past week is any indication, the 67-year-old has a unique ability to invoke nostalgia. Young, old, male, female… each of them had a story about singing along to the strains of a tune made famous by the woman Bono considers to be the “queen of Australia”. (An official royal title that might explain why three senior staff members were in tears while watching Newton-john recently perform on stage in Las Vegas. Hopelessly devoted, indeed.) Today being Father’s Day will invariably spark a wide range of emotions, too, but as our new columnist David Campbell points out, we rarely celebrate the raw side of parenthood through the ultra-filtered lens of social media. So today we acknowledge the many dads whose devotion to the ordinary makes them really quite extraordinary.
