The real fight was meant to be between two men – Anthony Mundine and Danny Green. And yet in the days leading up to their boxing rematch earlier this month, Jessica Mauboy found herself drawn into the controversy over Mundine’s refusal to stand during the national anthem, which the popular singer was scheduled to perform. After suggesting she had only been hired for the gig because “she is black”, Mundine went on to speculate that Mauboy had failed to properly research “Advance Australia Fair”. His words stung and, as Mauboy tells Kathy Mccabe in this week’s cover story, she passionately rejects the implication she is ignorant or disinterested in an issue so close to her heart. “Like I was dumb and didn’t care – of course I care!” she fires back. And her appearance on today’s cover, wearing black, red and yellow, is a portrait of a thoughtful young woman celebrating her Indigenous identity; a portrait of a proud Australian with nothing to apologise for.
