South African model Candice Swanepoel’s secrets.
SOUTH AFRICAN MODEL CANDICE SWANEPOEL REVEALS THE SECRETS TO HER HOMESPUN BEACH-BOHO STYLE
South African girls are laid-back; all that warm weather turns us into hippies! As a model, I’m constantly in full make-up, but my off-duty style is way more carefree. People can’t believe how simple my routine is: cleanse, tone, moisturise, SPF, fragrance, and I’m out the door.
I love using natural pantry ingredients; they are effective and inexpensive. I use coconut oil, rose water, witch hazel and pure aloe vera on my skin. My secret weapon is unpasteurised apple cider vinegar for re-balancing an oily scalp, healing sunburn and aiding digestion when added to hot water. It’s a true “super-fluid”.
I hydrate my hair with argan oil masks that I leave on for hours – it rescues dry strands. My other tip is to let your hair dry naturally whenever you can. I generally keep fit with resistance training and outdoor activities like paddleboarding and swimming. When I’m travelling, I’ll still stay active; hiking is an easy go-to exercise. Before beach shoots or a Victoria’s Secret show I have to bring my A-game, so I exfoliate all over with a coffee and coconut oil scrub and apply oil to keep skin extra smooth and soft. And there’s nothing more flattering than a sun-kissed glow…
I have to pinch myself that I’m the face for Juicy Couture’s new perfume Sucré, as I remember seeing the ads as a teen and relating to that sassy spirit. I had to channel the adventurous Juicy girl on the shoot. The look was all about pink – inspired by the playful bottle design – and the set was covered in cupcakes and macarons to conjure the sweet, flirty fun of the fragrance. Growing up I was drawn to the likes of Natalia Vodianova, Stephanie Seymour and Bo Derek. There’s nothing hotter than owning your femininity, yet being strong at the same time. Travel and street style were another influence, although looking back at old photos, I can see it was hit and miss!
Working with so many pros at fashion week, my biggest takeaway is wellblended contouring, adding definition with a cat-eye, and a focus on skin. Sometimes I’ll mix a bit of foundation with my sunscreen for a nice, sheer coverage and sun protection.
The more complicated life gets, the more I turn to simplicity. Forget gold and diamonds – give me a sleep-in and a remote setting with clean air. That’s true luxury to me…
