In households such as mine, where the younger members have a median age of six, we’re constantly on a countdown to the next special occasion. As soon as one birthday or national holiday is over, it’s time to start marking the days on the calendar until the next milestone. A recent family debate as to which is the best annual celebration (one son declared Christmas to be unbeatable, while his brother argued the combination of superhero costumes plus lollies makes Halloween the clear frontrunner) saw me nominate Easter as my personal favourite. Chocolate, time with family and – if you’re lucky – a few days off work… what’s not to love? And, as delicious. On Sunday columnist Matt Preston observed last week, another advantage Easter has over its more highprofile rival, Christmas, is that it comes minus the expectation of buying presents for everyone. (Although those of us on Easter Bunny duty are still required to hide certain purchases from prying young eyes.) So enjoy your Easter – and good news: there are only 253 days until Christmas.
