Hand weaving gets a modern makeover
In an increasingly urbanised world, furniture handcrafted from natural materials is more popular than ever – but it comes with unique design challenges. “The Revitalisation of Natural Fibre project is all about looking after the craftsmanship of hand weaving and also bringing the beauty of natural fibres to the homes of the many people in a sustainable way,” says IKEA designer Andreas Fredriksson. To that end, he has worked with communities in Vietnam and Indonesia to ensure hand weaving skills are preserved for the future, and designed flatpack rattan furniture that can be shipped more sustainably. The new collection launches in 2019.
