Hand weav­ing gets a mod­ern makeover

In an in­creas­ingly ur­banised world, fur­ni­ture hand­crafted from nat­u­ral ma­te­ri­als is more pop­u­lar than ever – but it comes with unique de­sign chal­lenges. “The Re­vi­tal­i­sa­tion of Nat­u­ral Fi­bre project is all about look­ing af­ter the crafts­man­ship of hand weav­ing and also bring­ing the beauty of nat­u­ral fi­bres to the homes of the many peo­ple in a sus­tain­able way,” says IKEA de­signer An­dreas Fredriks­son. To that end, he has worked with com­mu­ni­ties in Viet­nam and In­done­sia to en­sure hand weav­ing skills are pre­served for the fu­ture, and de­signed flat­pack rattan fur­ni­ture that can be shipped more sus­tain­ably. The new col­lec­tion launches in 2019.
