HE might still be a citizen of the world playing exhibition and legends tournaments, but Melbourne is always home at Christmas for former tennis ace Mark Philippoussis and his family.

Philippoussis, wife Silvana and their three-year-old son, Nicholas, are looking forward to celebrating the festive season with their families before embracing their favourite tournament — the Australian Open — in January.

“We are excited to be spending so much time down here with the family during the best time of the year — Christmas and the Aussie summer,’’ Silvana, the Liptember ambassador, said yesterday.

“Australia is home for the both of us. Christmas brings everyone together, it is all about laughter and happiness and creating cherished memories.’’

With Mark’s tennis commitments, it is convenient for the young family to be primarily based in San Diego, California.

However, Silvana, a successful model and brand ambassador, said their dream was to “chase the summer’’ with homes in Melbourne and the US, and spend six months a year in each country.

“We are definitely looking at properties (in Australia),’’ she said. “And we have just bought a home in the US. It is by the beach, which is our preferred lifestyle.

“I could not ask for more for my son to be growing up in that environment.’’

Silvana said Nicholas had inherited a love of tennis from his father, whom she wed in September 2013. “His grandfather, Mark’s dad, bought a little mini racquet and handed it to Nicholas, I think he was six months old, and he was soon hitting balls across the living room floor,’’ she said.

“He was two when he was hitting forehands and backhands and volleys.

“Every time he sees a tennis court he says ‘Daddy’. He understands what Mark does and he just wants to do everything that Daddy does, which is really sweet. I love seeing them both together.”
