3 die in tower blaze

AT least three peo­ple died and 12 were in­jured yes­ter­day in a fire at a Honolulu high-rise tower that was not equipped with sprin­klers, au­thor­i­ties said.

Four peo­ple were ad­mit­ted to hospi­tal and hun­dreds fled the res­i­den­tial com­plex as smoke bil­lowed from the up­per floors.

The dead were found on the 26th floor of the Marco Polo build­ing, where the fire broke out be­fore spread­ing to the 28th floor, fire chief Manuel Neves said.

Fire­fight­ers were search­ing the dam­aged ar­eas to make sure no oth­ers died.

The 36-floor build­ing near the tourist mecca of Waikiki was built in 1971, be­fore sprin­klers were re­quired.
