Ice labs booming in western suburbs

MELBOURNE’S west is the state’s epicentre for the manufacture of the deadly drug ice.

New statistics obtained by the Sunday Herald Sun have revealed in the past year more ice labs have been uncovered by police in Brimbank than anywhere else.

Central Melbourne, the city’s north and its southeastern suburbs also rank highly for production of the lethal drug.

Authorities believe organised crime figures are increasingly cooking up ice onshore instead of importing the finished product from overseas.

Border officials have noticed a spike in ice precursor chemicals being illegally imported into the country, mainly from China.

A police spokesman said: “Victoria Police has absolutely no tolerance for criminals who set up clandestine drug laboratories with the sole purpose of profiting from the widespread harm caused by drugs.”

Opposition police spokesman Edward O’Donohue criticised the government’s Ice Action Plan and said it had failed. “Ice labs are operating across Melbourne,” he said.
