Knifeman slays tourists on beach

Sunday Herald Sun - - News -

A KNIFE-wielding attacker swam to an Egyptian hotel beach and went on a stabbing rampage yesterday, killing two German female tourists and injuring four others.

The male assailant yelled “I don’t want Egyptians” before slashing the women’s throats at the popular Red Sea resort of Hurghada.

The knifeman, aged in his mid-20s, was arrested as he tried to swim away from the scene of the attack.

Police officers used a boat belonging to the hotel to catch him. Last night he was being questioned.

Officials said the man sneaked into the grounds of the Sunny Days El Palacio Hotel by swimming from a nearby public beach.

Hospital sources said the murdered tourists were aged in their early 60s.

One hotel guest said the attacker shouted at Egyptian hotel staff to clear a path as he targeted foreigners on the beach. “Go away, I don’t want you Egyptians, you are not wanted,” he shouted.

A senior interior ministry spokesman said last night: “We don’t know his motives yet, he could be crazy — it’s too early to tell.”

The attack came hours after five policemen were shot to death in Cairo’s twin city of Giza when suspected Islamic militants opened fire on their vehicle early in the morning.
