Quickly bring Prodrive up to speed
McLaughlin will start today as the $3.50 favourite with TAB. Supercars champion Shane Van Gisbergen is next best at $6, while Chaz Mostert and Triple Eight star Jamie Whincup are $7.
After his strong Shootout showing, Winterbottom is the best value of the biggest names, on the seventh line of betting at $12.
The Shootout also proved a comeback for Van Gisbergen.
After a slow start to the week, the New Zealander powered around the Mt Panorana course in 2:04.66 — enough to put him into fifth place on the starting grid.
Over six practice sessions and one qualifying run, Van Gisbergen had struggled for speed. Yet entering the Top 10 Shootout in sixth, or fourth driver onto the track, his time was enough to pick up two spots.
Elsewhere, Fabian Coulthard blew his chance for pole after an error of judgment through The Cutting left him far closer to a concrete than he would have liked.
The error cost him 0.3sec on a lap that eventually placed him seventh.
“I’ve struggled there all weekend,” Coulthard said. “So it wasn’t any surprise that something was going to happen. But you have to give it your all and that’s all we had.”
The Top 10 Shootout also proved an unhappy one for Holden favourite James Courtney, who has never won a Bathurst 1000 title.
After enduring a couple of brake locks, he finished 10th.
