Weekly war tribute poll pledge
A SPECIAL ceremony would be held at the Shrine of Remembrance every week to commemorate Victoria’s war heroes if Labor is re-elected.
On Remembrance Day, a century since the end of World War I, Premier Daniel Andrews will today announce plans for a weekly Last Post Ceremony at Melbourne’s Shrine, acknowledging the men and women on the Roll of Honour.
It would mirror a daily ceremony held at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra that allows veterans, their families, school students and the public to pay their respects to Diggers.
“Our veterans have always been there for us and we’ll always be there for them,” Mr Andrews told the Sunday Herald Sun.
The government is also vowing to provide $1 million for the Vietnam Veterans Association to help support its members.
A further $200,000 would be spent on the National Vietnam Veterans Museum on Phillip Island, where students can learn about the conflict that claimed the lives of 521 Australians. PEACE SO BITTERSWEET, P32-33, ANDREW RULE, P34
