SOMETHING TO CHEW ON
“Slow down, you chew too fast!” Okay, so I’m mangling the lyrics, but Simon & Garfunkel were on to something. Chewing each mouthful thoroughly, instead of gobbling it down, is good for your health.
For starters, production of the hunger hormone ghrelin is reduced, so you feel fuller faster and for longer. In addition, a recent study showed comprehensive chewers consume 12 per cent fewer calories than those who wolf down their food.
Chewing also releases enzymes that improve nutrient absorption. So slow down, like Paul and Art said, and start “feelin’ groovy”.
