What you wear plays a sig­nif­i­cant role in how your body shape is por­trayed to oth­ers. Per­sonal stylist Jo Blank­field says the key to look­ing leaner is to “elon­gate your shape us­ing ver­ti­cal lines in your dress­ing”. She has th­ese prac­ti­cal fash­ion tips to give you a slim­mer sil­hou­ette: Dress in light lay­er­ing: For ex­am­ple, wear a shorter top un­der a light jacket or vest. Blank­field says denim vests are very “on trend” this sum­mer and are great for mak­ing your torso look longer and leaner. Ac­ces­sorise with longer neck­laces: A pen­dant neck­lace that fin­ishes at the bra line draws the eyes to the small part of the waist and away from any larger ar­eas you’re try­ing to hide. Wear prints with ver­ti­cal move­ment: While ver­ti­cal stripes have long been a slim­ming fash­ion tip, Blank­field says that prints that move the eye up and down work even bet­ter. “They’re a great dis­trac­tion,” she adds. Choose flat­ter­ing fab­rics: Steer clear of clingy jersey and Ly­cra and go for soft drap­ing li­nen-cot­ton blends. Neo­prene, the ma­te­rial used in wet­suits, is a big trend this year, Blank­field says, and it’s great in skirts and tops as it holds its shape. Dress to suit your body and en­hance your as­sets: For ex­am­ple, if you’re a bit “hippy”, wear jack­ets that sit at the waist and bal­ance out your lower torso. If you’re a clas­sic “ap­ple” then you want to draw at­ten­tion to your legs and away from your top-heavy area by wear­ing mid-length skirts.
