WHAT CARBS DO

Sunday Mail - Body and Soul - - FRONT PAGE -

Carbs are an important energy source. “When you look at the diets of athletes, you always find carbohydrates,” McMillan says. “It’s excellent fuel.”

Elizabeth Borgo, a dietitian from Nutrition Australia Queensland, agrees: “When you eat a carb-rich food, it’s broken into glucose, which enters your bloodstream and feeds the muscles and brain with energy. There’s strong evidence that a diet high in wholegrains is linked with lower body mass index and reduced risk of being overweight. But not all carbohydrate-rich foods are created equal.”
