A WHEELCHAIR-bound Japanese pensioner has died after being attacked by a swarm of Asian giant hornets.

Chieko Kikuchi, 87, was being taken back home from a nursing facility in western Ehime Prefecture on Thursday when they descended on her.

A carer, who was escorting her at the time, and paramedics who were called to the scene watched helplessly as she was stung about 150 times during the ordeal.

Eventually the insects retreated and Mrs Kikuchi was rushed to hospital but died of her injuries the following day.

The swarm came from a nest that was attached to a building near the woman’s home.

A forestry agency official said hornets often attacked when people got too close to their nests.

“To avoid getting stung by hornets, you should keep away from their nests, wear protective jackets and use a wasp killer spray,” he said.

Some 20 people die from hornet stings every year in Japan.
