Diamonds in the scruff

EMUS are known for swallowing stones to help digest their tucker but Eddie the emu has more expensive tastes in rocks – diamond earrings, to be exact.

Wildlife carer Mel Pope is minus a very expensive pair of earrings after Eddie pecked them straight out of her earlobes.

Eddie, pictured, arrived at Ms Pope’s Kobble Bird Shelter in Queensland as an orphan several weeks ago. “He’s attracted to anything shiny and as I was picking him to move ... he grabbed one of my earrings,” she said. “As I was trying to recover from the shock, he got the other one, too.”

A “distraught” Ms Pope took Eddie to the vet, where X-rays revealed the $2000, half-carat diamond and white gold studs were lodged firmly in his gut.

After sifting through Eddie’s poo in vain, she said he was showing no ill effects.
