Verschoor takes reins at Town Hall
PAGES 12-13: All the colour of the day ADELAIDE has a new local council landscape, with Sandy Verschoor, above, elected as Lord Mayor of Adelaide City Council and a new broom sweeping through other councils.
Deputy Mayor Ms Verschoor easily defeated fellow councillor Mark Hamilton to become the first female Lord Mayor since Jane Lomax-Smith. Women also won the top jobs in areas including Campbelltown, Burnside and Mitcham.
A mood for change altered power blocks across the state – and if you thought your vote did not count, consider voters of Ceduna, where just five votes had Perry Will installed as Mayor, defeating Ken Maynard.
An “absolutely excited” Jill Whittaker became Campbelltown’s first female mayor in its 150-year history after a resounding win against Marijka Ryan.
In Burnside, Anne Monceaux defeated incumbent David Parkin and Heather Holmes-Ross claimed victory over Glenn Spear in Mitcham.
