Ver­schoor takes reins at Town Hall


PAGES 12-13: All the colour of the day ADE­LAIDE has a new lo­cal coun­cil land­scape, with Sandy Ver­schoor, above, elected as Lord Mayor of Ade­laide City Coun­cil and a new broom sweep­ing through other coun­cils.

Deputy Mayor Ms Ver­schoor eas­ily de­feated fel­low coun­cil­lor Mark Hamil­ton to be­come the first fe­male Lord Mayor since Jane Lo­max-Smith. Women also won the top jobs in ar­eas in­clud­ing Camp­bell­town, Burn­side and Mitcham.

A mood for change al­tered power blocks across the state – and if you thought your vote did not count, con­sider vot­ers of Ce­duna, where just five votes had Perry Will in­stalled as Mayor, de­feat­ing Ken May­nard.

An “ab­so­lutely ex­cited” Jill Whit­taker be­came Camp­bell­town’s first fe­male mayor in its 150-year his­tory af­ter a re­sound­ing win against Mar­i­jka Ryan.

In Burn­side, Anne Mon­ceaux de­feated in­cum­bent David Parkin and Heather Holmes-Ross claimed vic­tory over Glenn Spear in Mitcham.

THE BIG GUY AR­RIVES: Fa­ther Christ­mas waves to some of the 320,000 peo­ple who lined the city streets yes­ter­day for the 2018 Credit Union Christ­mas Pageant. While the floats kept the kids en­ter­tained, Santa was the true star of the pa­rade.
