Secret lives of the pod

Sunday Tasmanian - Tassie Living - - Television - BRITTANY STACK The Dolphins of Shark Bay, ABC1, tonight, 7.30pm

BIOLOGIST Janet Mann has been tracking a dolphin named Puck, which lives in Western Australia’s Shark Bay, for more than 20 years.

She describes Puck, her favourite dolphin, as ‘‘ a daredevil, bold and courageous, and a great mother’’.

This heart-warming documentary follows Puck, the matriarch of the Beachie family of dolphins and her family over six months.

The story begins when Puck gives birth to her sixth calf, Samu.

We see Samu’s first tentative swim and hear Puck’s reassuring calls as he finds his voice and develops his own signature call.

When tiger shark attacks dramatically increase, the Beachie family is on edge and Samu is in particular danger, as almost 50 per cent of calves don’t survive to their third year.

A World Heritage region, Shark Bay is one of the most breathtaking marine areas on Earth, which naturally makes for impressive cinematography.
