THE WAY BACK (M)
★★★ ■ GETTING out of the gulag proves to be the easy part for the protagonists of this inspirational drama who escape a Soviet concentration camp only to face a 4000-mile trek of a lifetime – through snow, desert and over mountains – until they reach safety and freedom in India. Set in 1941, it’s based on a real life journey and although these on-screen characters and their relationships are a touch underdeveloped it has much to say about the human spirit. Some of the cinematography is just as inspiring.
Extras: ★★ ½ A lengthy and likeable journey of the journey featurette.
