Pump it up
Music speakers have come a long way from clunky boom boxes, writes Maureen Shelley
DOMA MINI SPEAKI Doma, $ 12.95 to $ 19.50; www. doma. hk ★ ★ ★ ★
This speaker gets full points for its cute appearance and should be a big hit with young music fans. It lost some of its appeal, however, when one of the two units reviewed failed to work. The SPEAKi comes with a 3.5mm cable to connect to your MP3 player and users charge it via a computer connection. The miniature speaker arrives in white, orange, black, blue, fuchsia, silver, green or red and has a key chain connector for easy carriage. The sound is substantially better than that delivered through your smartphone.
SONY, SANS300 Sony, $ 229; sony. com. au ★ ★ ★ ★ ★
This Sony speaker serves as one to rule all inputs. The SANS300 will connect wirelessly to Blu-ray home theatre systems, a hi-fi, PCs or gadgets such as smartphones and tablets. The speaker has 360-degree design and delivers surprising volume. There is a free app for your iPod or iPhone so you can use these devices as the remote control. It will sync with compatible devices so you can have the same sound playing in multiple rooms.
SMIGGLE HAVE A BALL Smiggle, $ 24.95; smiggle. com. au ★ ★ ★ ★
These fun speakers would be hard to miss. The Smiggle sound gadgets come in violet, fuchsia, aqua, fern and black, and while they’re bigger than a golf ball, they’re smaller than a tennis ball. Despite their small form, and a weight of just 65g, the speakers deliver 2w of sound of a reasonable quality. They operate for up to eight hours once charged and Smiggle also offers a dinosaur-themed USB cable hub or a Luna LED standing light in matching colours.
J& L IWALL J & L, $ 299; dockhub. com. au ★ ★ ★ ★ ★
This speaker is not terribly portable, being 1m tall and 44cm wide. Regardless, it serves as a docking station for your iPhone, iPod or MP3 player, and also has an FM radio and an input for your TV. The eight-inch subwoofer can produce a thumping big sound, complemented by two tweeters and 50w of sound through the mid-range. The 18kg unit itself comes in charcoal or cherry oak and can be moved outside for parties or barbecues.
UNIDEN BTS200 Uniden, $ 129.95; uniden. com. au ★ ★ ★ ★ ★
The bass delivered from this portable speaker is amazing and the gadget comes with plenty of extras, too. The BTS200’ s removable battery can be used to charge your smartphone. Its LED display shows how much charge it has left, and the speaker can act as a music player when connected to an MP3 player or smartphone, or as a speakerphone for conference calls.
The speaker, which is compatible with Android or Apple phones and tablets, produces 4w of sound power from two channels and will play for up to five hours.
