IF she wanted to make a statement, she succeeded.

When Katie Holmes, 32, walked the red carpet recently for her new movie Jack And

Jill, she made two statements. She chose to wear a surprisingly sexy diaphanous chiffon blouse and bondage heels and, for once, she did not take husband Tom Cruise to the premiere.

Walking the red carpet alone, Holmes stopped to greet fans and the crowd could not get enough.

The actor is enjoying a career resurgence after years of struggling to find the same success she had with her Hollywood breakthrough role as Bruce Wayne’s childhood friend Rachel Dawes in Batman

Begins in 2005. Her recent solo appearance said to everyone that Holmes sees herself back on track. One of the reasons she has finally had the confidence to go it alone is down to the fact she feels more centred than ever in her role as a mum to five- year- old daughter Suri.

‘‘ Everything [ about being a mother] is the best part,’’ she tells E Guide. ‘‘ It is just the most wonderful time in my life. Suri’s so helpful and so loving. She loves to sing and dance. She’s just so beautiful.’’

It has also helped that Holmes has enjoyed very much filming with Adam Sandler in the quirky comedy Jack And Jill.

Her character Erin Sadelstein works to keep the peace between her husband Jack ( Sandler, pictured above with Holmes) and his twin sister Jill ( also played by Sandler). Jill visits them for Thanksgiving and refuses to go home, leading to hilarious results on and off camera.

‘‘ It was a lot of fun,’’ Holmes says. ‘‘ My cheeks are only just getting better because they hurt so much from laughing. I laughed so much making this movie.’’

Sandler took some tips from his co- star on how best to portray Jill.

Holmes adds: ‘‘ What was odd was having conversations with him about shaving your legs. But I appreciated it because he really understands what a pain it is. Adam claims to have taken his bra home!’’

It was also a great place for Suri to hang out and watch her mum at work.

‘‘ She really likes movie sets,’’ the actor reveals.

‘‘ She loves the hair and make- up trailer. Who doesn’t? But on this it was great because everyone had their kids come along.’’

Holmes says her daughter is also pretty style savvy: ‘‘ She picks out some of her clothes.

‘‘ When she comes to photoshoots with me she likes to play with all the shoes. It is very sweet to watch.’’

According to Holmes, Suri has

Every day I am trying to find out more things about myself. I love changing

inherited a love of clothes from her.

‘‘ Apparently I used to choose my own little outfits for school and for kindergarten,’’ she says.

‘‘ Sometimes the results were a little crazy but I loved it.’’

It is her family that brings Holmes the most joy. She has just celebrated her fifth wedding anniversary with Cruise, 49. The couple became engaged after dating for two months, tying the knot in a lavish ceremony at a 15th- century castle in Italy. The Armani- clad couple’s guests included Jennifer Lopez, Marc Anthony and Will and Jada Pinkett Smith.

For Holmes, who has her own fashion label Holmes & Yang, it was her proudest fashion moment. ‘‘ I was so nervous,’’ she says. ‘‘ I turned to my Dad and said: ‘ Do I look OK? This is important.’ And he turned to me and said: ‘ You look great. You look beautiful’.’’ Holmes adds: ‘‘ The moment the doors opened and I saw Tom, I was just locked in. It was just so magical. As a woman, how you look on your wedding day is important.’’

As well as being aware of her style, the actor also exercises to keep her body in top shape. She says she takes spin classes, although she does not tend to work out with Tom.

‘‘ He works out but he mainly does his own thing,’’ she says. ‘‘ But he’s in great shape. He’s very strong.’’

However, unlike most of her Hollywood counterparts, she is not obsessed with staying young and says she is excited’ by getting older.

‘‘ I like looking back and seeing pictures of the past because at that time that is who I created for me,’’ she says. ‘‘ I appreciate it more and more. But every day I am trying to find out more things about myself. I love changing.’’
