to speak out against racism prompts her to write a book fea­tur­ing the sto­ries of maids (‘‘ the help’’), chiefly those of her friend’s house­keeper ( Vi­ola Davis). There are is­sues with the char­ac­ter­i­sa­tion and the su­per­fi­cial script but the ex­cel­lent cast­ing helps mask some of those, as does the film’s pos­i­tiv­ity and de­sire to wear its heart on its sleeve. Ex­tras: A dis­ap­point­ing col­lec­tion of bonus ma­te­rial on the DVD, with only two deleted scenes with di­rec­tor’s in­tros and a mu­sic video. The Blu- ray edi­tion only fares marginally bet­ter, with three deleted scenes ( which dif­fer from those on the DVD) plus a mak­ing- of and a fea­turette pay­ing trib­ute to the maids of Mis­sis­sippi.
