Well above expectations
WHILE the commercial networks rolled out drama adaptations of Sherlock Holmes, Alcatraz and popular fairytales ( Once Upon a Time), Aunty opted for Charles Dickens’ Great Expectations – but not as you’ve ever seen it.
This three- part series is amazing, featuring some of the grandest, most beautiful cinematography, score and costuming.
The cast is captivating and the gritty screenplay has this reviewer hooked.
This adaptation was first broadcast on British television over the Christmas period in 2011 and stars Ray Winstone as Magwitch, Gillian Anderson as Miss Havisham, Douglas Booth as Pip, Vanessa Kirby as Estella and David Suchet as Jaggers.
Anderson’s Miss Havisham drew attention to the production – she is a mere 43 compared with other actresses who have played her.
But the critics’ reception for the former X- Files star was generally positive.
Tonight, orphan Pip ( Oscar Kennedy) is given a chance to leave behind his pauper life forever.
He dares to believe he might be destined for something special, something great.
For drama lovers, this is a must- watch.
